Tennessee is often portrayed as a “Constitution Carry” state, but this is not true. State law prohibits ALL forms of carry even on one’s own property, then has a complex and cumbersome system of legal defenses.
KeepAndBear.org is working full-time to transform Tennessee into the most pro-gun state in the USA and the template for all others to follow.

Long Gun Carry - Illegal!!!
Tennessee currently stands with Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey banning the carrying of long arms with ammunition “nearby.”
Even California and Minnesota beat Tennessee, as does the rest of the country. The 2nd Amendment isn’t about pistols – that is undisputable based upon history. The 2nd Amendment seeks to ensure the Militia can always be by prohibiting the infringement of owning and carrying battle arms.
Solutions: Carry AR/AK “Pistols” in public. Nullify the statute by disobeying it and carrying long guns in public (risk and reward involved). Donate to support the legal case.
Carry at Parks - Illegal without Permit
Further highlighting that Tennessee is not at all a Constitution Carry state, carry in parks is prohibited without a permit. Despite carrying in parks being the quintessential tradition in America that led to the 2nd Amendment being ratified, and traditional laws actually requiring people to openly carry long battle arms in parks, Tennessee pretends to be a Constitution Carry state and prohibits everything without a permit.
Plaintiffs along with the Tennessee Firearms Association and Gun Owners of America are currently involved in a lawsuit to challenge this. The lawsuit was filed in February of 2023. Read more about it here at TFA’s site.
One thing that is interesting is this: TCA 39-17-1311 only prohibits carrying weapons prohibited by 39-17-1302(a) which are as follows:
(a) A person commits an offense who intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures, transports, repairs or sells:
(1) An explosive or an explosive weapon;
(2) A device principally designed, made or adapted for delivering or shooting an explosive weapon;
(3) A machine gun;
(4) [Deleted by 2022 amendment.]
(5) Hoax device;
(6) Knuckles; or
(7) Any other implement for infliction of serious bodily injury or death that has no common lawful purpose.
Common firearms – rifles, pistols, shotguns, etc, do not meet any of these descriptions in the list. Therefore, they are not banned. Yet gun owners have been harassed, arrested, cited, and jailed for simply bearing arms in public in a supposed “pro-gun” “Constitution carry” state.

Notice to Businesses with Signs
No-guns signs are not only dangerous as they invite criminals, but they are a psychological disservice to society. The messages and ideas they propagate are extremely detrimental.
Download (Right Click and Save As) and Print out this “Notice to Proprietors” here.
Deliver this to businesses that post. Best yet – record a video of you politely handing it to an employee or manager/owner of an establishment. Send us the video by Contacting Us. This will be made public record for proof of notice.
Notice to Law Enforcement Agencies
Similar to the notice to businesses, we want to put law enforcement agencies on notice as well. Politicians and judges don’t detain, cite, and arrest – law enforcement officers do. They violate the 2nd Amendment every day in Tennessee when they detain a gun owner longer just for possessing a gun. Or worse, they mistreat gun owners disrespectfully while detaining them and then cite, arrest, confiscate, and sometimes even use lethal force and other violence.
Putting them on notice helps remove the “good faith” as they could say they weren’t aware of the Bruen decision. We definitely want this notice to be delivered throughout the state and recorded on video and sent to us. Lawsuits to follow when rights are violated!
